The Sámi flag flying for the first time in Ireland.

24/02/2009 // 6th February 2009 was a good day for any Sámi staying in Dublin when the Embassy for the first time hoisted the official Sámi flag on the Sámi National Day.

The Sámi National Day commemorates the first Sámi congress, held in Trondheim, Norway in 1917.

Since 1993 Norway has recognized this day as the Sámi National Day and therefore a national flag day in Norway. Up untill now the Embassy has had to use the Norwegian flag to mark the day, but this year we got hold of a Sámi flag. The flag waved proudly over the Embassy's front door all day as shown by the photos.

The Sámi people, an indigenous group from the north of Scandinavia, is scattered across four countries; Norway, Sweden, Finland and Russia. Their flag was first inaugurated during the Sámi conference in Åre, Sweden on 15 August 1986.
