The enlarging EU – challenges and opportunities for Norway
07/02/2006 //
Minister of Foreign Affairs Mr Støre presented the Norwegian Governments European policy at a Conference in Oslo 2 February. In his speech he identified the two main political priorities for Norway in the enlarged EU: Helping to develop an inclusive society in Europe; and contributing to responsible management of natural resources, especially in the High North.
We are not part of the EU and will not join the Union during our term of office, Mr Støre said, but he called for a proactive European policy. It involves seizing opportunities in Europe. It involves ensuring that we can exert influence and do so in areas of importance to us. It involves setting priorities and putting forward clear policy aims. By taking action we will win credibility, he said. A proactive European policy also involves shifting our perspective and focus. We should look for opportunities rather than just focusing on the problems in our relations with the EU. Mr Støre announced that the Government is currently drawing up an action plan enabling the implementation of a proactive European policy.
